Crusaders strike gold in first trip to state tourney

from Corn Bible Academy press releases

Corn Bible Academy, a Christian high school founded in 1902 by Mennonite Brethren living in western Oklahoma, won the Oklahoma Secondary Activity Association Class B Girls Basketball State Tournament March 5 and saw three players named to the All Tournament Team. The Lady Crusaders brought home the championship Gold Ball on their first trip to the state tournament.

For a first-person account of this historic moment in CBA sports history, read this blog entry by CBA faculty member Joyce Creed.

In the opening round, the Crusaders defeated the #6 Timberlake Tigers 42-36. In the semifinals the Crusaders faced the #8 rated Balko Lady Bison, winning 52-47. The win propelled the Crusaders to Championship Saturday to face the Hammon Lady warriors, the #1 ranked, undefeated favorite. The Warriors eliminated the Crusaders last year in the area finals and had beaten the Crusaders earlier this season 50-49. CBA finished the season at 23-8 and handed Hammon (29-1) their only loss of the 2010-11 season.

At the conclusion of the OSSAA Class B girls state basketball tournament, three CBA players—senior Emily Dick and juniors Jessica Penner and Taylor Smith—were named to the all tournament team. In the three games, Dick averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds per game, Penner averaged 14 points and 11 rebounds and Smith averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds.

One player from the all tournament team is honored as the tournament’s most valuable player. This year, Penner was selected as the Class B state tournament’s MVP. In the championship game, she scored 26 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, and had two steals and two assists.

Corn Bible Academy, located in Corn, Okla., is the oldest Christian school west of the Mississippi River. While U.S. Mennonite Brethren have a long history of supporting post high school institutions, the denomination has not designated any elementary, middle or high schools as district or national ministries. But there are individual congregations that operate schools; CBA is one such school.
