The Christian Leader received three awards in the Evangelical Press Association 2025 contest, including an Award of Merit in the Awards of Excellence contest and two awards in the Higher Goals contest.

Awards of Excellence recognizes publications as a whole. The Christian Leader received an Award of Merit in the denominational print category.

The judge specifically noted the Church Spotlight column for the way it showcases specific congregations and commended the design. The judge said, “Thank you for simple, eye-catching covers and a clean consistent design throughout.”

The Higher Goals competition honors individual aspects of a publication, such as writing, photography, design and special features. There were a total of 868 entries in the Higher Goals competition.

Jim Holm received fourth place in the Higher Goals: Biblical Exposition category for his article, “Made in the image of God,” an essay published in the Sept/Oct 2024 issue that explores the conversation Jesus has with the religious leaders about paying taxes recorded in Mark 12.

The judge wrote, “This is a wonderful article presented at an ideal time. I love the opening, biblical references, quotes, main theme and key takeaways. This article fits the readers and offers a healthy perspective.”

Associate editor Janae Shafer received a fifth-place award in the Higher Goals: Reporting for her article, “Serving in solidarity,” published in the Jan/Feb 2024 issue. The article tells the story of Pastor Lawum Kayamba and his ministry among immigrants in Portland, Maine.

“Remarkable story,” said the judge. “Well reported, great details, a compelling and inspiring story. Starts with an intriguing lead and carries the reader all the way through.”

CL editor Connie Faber says, “To be recognized in the Awards of Excellence contest affirms the work of everyone involved in the magazine—columnists, feature writers, news writers, photographers, the magazine designer and the editors. Our USMB family has great writers who contribute feature articles and columns, and it is wonderful to have Jim affirmed for his excellent piece. Janae is a talented storyteller, and this is the second time EPA has honored her work with an award.”

The awards were presented at the Evangelical Press Association Christian media convention held May 4-6 in Branson, Missouri. CL editors Faber and Janae Shafer attended the annual gathering that included plenary sessions as well as a wide variety of workshops on writing, editing, design, photography, technology, social media, management, marketing and current issues presented by ministry and industry leaders.
