MB Foundation is recognizing National Estate Planning Awareness Week, observed annually during the third full week of October (October 20–26). This initiative encourages individuals and families to take proactive steps in securing their future and protecting their loved ones by establishing an estate plan. The effort seeks to educate on the importance of having a comprehensive and up-to-date estate plan, regardless of financial status or where someone is at in the planning process.
Despite its importance, estate planning is often overlooked. Data shows that up to 70% of all adults do not have an up-to-date will, leaving their assets—and their families—vulnerable to the complexities of state probate laws.
Patty Stutzman of Albany, Oregon, shares her experience navigating the complexities of not having an up-to-date plan following the sudden loss of her husband: “It’s hard to gather everything when your head is in a fog. We don’t know when God will call us home. Estate planning isn’t something that can wait.”
Life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, death of a spouse or changes in financial circumstances are key moments to review and update estate plans.
A simple will or trust can prevent unnecessary stress, financial burdens and legal disputes for loved ones during an already difficult time.
Eleanor Boese of Salem, Oregon, another individual who faced the loss of her husband, experienced the difference of having their plan in place. “I was never stressed,” Boese says. “I knew what Dale and I had planned, and wanted to carry it on.”
